At the 31st International Conference on DNA Computing and Molecular Programming (DNA31) held in Lyon, France, between August 25 and 29, 2025, Prof. Chunhai FAN from Shanghai Jiao Tong University received the 2024 "Rozenberg Tulip Award."

Established by the International Society for Nanoscale Science, Computation and Engineering (ISNSCE), the award honors Prof. Grzegorz Rozenberg, a renowned Dutch theoretical computer scientist and pioneer in natural computing. It recognizes one scientist each year for outstanding contributions to the field of biomolecular computing and molecular programming, with the award presented at the following year’s DNA conference.

This is the first time that a Chinese scientist has received this honor, reflecting the international recognition of China’s fundamental research and innovative contributions in this cutting-edge interdisciplinary field. In its citation, the award committee highlighted Prof. Chunhai FAN’s broad impact in DNA nanotechnology, particularly his outstanding achievements in applications such as biosensing, biomolecular computing, and drug delivery, as well as his long-term contributions to advancing this field in China.

Personal Profile

Chunhai FAN is a K. C. Wong Chair Professor at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, New Cornerstone Investigator, and Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. He received his bachelor’s and doctoral degrees from Nanjing University and conducted postdoctoral research at the University of California, Santa Barbara. From 2004 to 2018, he served as a professor at the Shanghai Institute of Applied Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences. Since 2018, he has been a professor at the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, where he currently serves as Dean of the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Executive Dean of the Institute of Translational Medicine, and Chief Scientist of the National Center for Translational Medicine (Tang Zhongying). He is the Associate Editor of JACS Au, Co-Chair of the Editorial Board of ChemPlusChem, and serves on the editorial boards of more than ten international journals, including Angewandte Chemie, Accounts of Chemical Research, and ACS Nano. He has been elected as a member of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences and as a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), International Society of Electrochemistry (ISE), American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE), and the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC). Prof. Chunhai FAN has published over 700 papers, cited about 80,000 times, with an H-index of 138, and has been listed as a Highly Cited Researcher globally since 2014.
